SCENE OPENS ON A YOUNG WOMAN DREAMING IN BED SHAKING HER HEAD FROM SIDE TO SIDE. IN HER DREAM SHE IS BEING CHASED BY A CHARACTER THAT CAME TO LIFE FROM A SCREENPLAY SHE IS WRITING. SWEATING AND SCREAMING SHE GETS UP TO THE REALIZATION IT'S ONLY A DREAM

YOUNG WOMAN

Wow! That was real to me. I've got to put this on diskett. First I'll call my sister. (she makes her way out of the bedroom, a stop to the fridge for some yogurt and heads for the phone.)

SCENE CHANGES TO AN ARTIST STUDIO WHERE A WOMAN IS PAINTING A PORTRAIT THE CAMERA ZOOMS IN FOR A CLOSE UP OF THE MAGIZINE SHE IS PAINTING THE PORTRAIT FROM; IT SHOWS THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF A SHIPPING CONGLOMARATE SHE PICKS UP THE PHONE BUT STILL KEEPING AN EYE ON HER WORK

SISTER

Hello Kricha, only you would call me at this the draker side of night.

KRICHA

I just had a dream!

SISTER

So did Martin Luther King. Why are you calling me?

KRICHA

Let me get to that sister dear. You know what you do? Painting people from magazines and video and then contacting them.

SISTER

Yes.

KRICHA

Well I feel I can have that power now. That's what my dream was about. Why don't I come over and tell you about it tomorrow Donna.

DONNA

It's tomorrow now.

KRICHA

I will be right over.

IT'S ABOUT FIVE O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING AND THE SUN IS RISING OVER THE CITY, DONNA SKETCHES THE SUNRISE, ENTER KRICHA WITH A CUP OF EXOTIC TEA SHE TAKES A SIP AND BEGINS TO SPEAK

KRICHA

I'll tell you the plot of my story. It's like this. There is this struggling young writer, he writes this brilliant screenplay, well actually he created a whole project, and is now trying to finance it by selling out cheapley to already famous writers (Donna was intriuged by what her younger sister is saying) He strikes a bargin with this writer (pause) Why don't I put it down on disk and when it's finished you could paint the picture of the most famous writer and when you go to show him his portrait you could just drop my script on him.

NINE MONTHS LATER KRICHA NILES COMPLETS HER SCREENPLAY SHE IS AT THE DOOR OF HER SISTER WITH A VARIETY OF MAGAZINES IN HER HANDS. SHE LETS HERSELF IN WITH THE KEY, IN THE STUDIO SHE LOOKS AT THE VAST COLLECTION OF PAINTINGS ON THE WALL

KRICHA

(to herself) What a great way to meet people. (moving closer to the pictures on the wall, a rattling of keys interupt her journey through the the paintings) Is someone home? (she moves in the direction of the door, and is greeted by her sister) Hello Donna! (she hugs her) It has been awhile hasn't it?

DONNA

It sure has, I called you from the airport (she turns and shuts the door) I see why there was no answer.

KRICHA

I knew you were coming back today but I didn't know when. I have got some exciting news the screenplay is finished, and if you don't mind me ringing my own bell. (the phone rings Donna picks it up)

DONNA

Hello! Oh hello Brayden. (pause) I arrived about five minutes ago. Yes. Kricha is about to tell me some exciting news. Ok! Ok! I'll see you tomorrow. (she hangs up the phone) Brayden says hello.

KRICHA

Where is Brayden and how is he?

DONNA

Brayden is in Switzerland and he is fine, I am flying out to meet him tomorrow.

KRICHA

But you just got back.

DONNA

And a little pressed for time, can we chat while I prepare a bath. (she heads towards the bathroom) Please continue with the good news you were about to tell me.

KRICHA

Where was I? I remember! I was rining my own bell.

DONNA

Where did you get that expression? "Ringing your own bell."

KRICHA

One of my characters in the screenplay speaks that way. Oh Donna! I think this is the best thing I have ever written and it all started that night nine months ago when I had that dream. (the phone rings again)

DONNA

Will you get it Kricha, I am indisposed. (Kricha leaves to answer the phone)

KRICHA

Hello mother. Yes Donna is back but she is indisposed. Can you call back later mother? I am trying to discuss something important with her right now.

SCENE CHANGES TO HER MOTHER'S PLACE

MOTHER

(touching her chest) Excuse me, your sister is back and you don't have anytime for your mother.

KRICHA

I didn't say that Ma. (she touches her forehead)

MOTHER

Oh at first it was mother, now it's Ma.

KRICHA

Your'e getting into symantics now. All I want to do is talk to Donna before she leaves again.

MOTHER

Well what am I sawdust? I want to talk to her too, so stay on the line until she gets out of the bath.

KRICHA

Ah C'mon Ma I am trying to discuss my screenplay with her. Since she got in ten minutes ago we didn't even say ten words without being interupted. (Donna shouts from the bath) Donna says she is going to come by later and take you out for dinner.

(IN A RED SPORTS CAR DONNA AND KRICHA DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY)

KRICHA

(excitied) You know, two people finish reading the script already, and they told me it has changed their lives.

DONNA

Is that what your character calls ringing your own bell?

KRICHA

No I really mean that. (pause) They say they sort of become their favorite character in the screenplay.

DONNA

What were they on?

KRICHA

C'mon Donna, the most these people have is a couple a beers very unpretentious. (she reaches for a cigarette)

DONNA

I thought you gave up the wicked weed.

(they arrive at their mother's residence the two girls are greeted by their mother at the door)

MOTHER

(Hugging Donna and kissing her, about to hug Kricha notices her cigarette and draws back) You started smoking again? (turns to Donna) Maybe you should be like your sister when... (before she can finish Kricha interupts)

KRICHA

Maybe when I sell my screenplay, I'll get a little more respect. (turns quickly and leaves)

MOTHER

I don't know what's the matter with her she has been on edge lately.

DONNA

I better go see if I can talk to her. (she exits but is too late Kricha got in her car and speed off. Entering the house she shakes her hair out a bit) She is gone Mum. And it started to rain.

MOTHER

Oh my God, Donna, she has been driving me crazy with that script of hers. I ask her the other day. How come she is smoking? She tells me her script is making her do it. I thought she meant the pressures of wrighting it. She says "no" not the pressure but one of the villians in her script.

SCENE OPENS ON THE WINDSHEILD WIPER OF KRICHA'S CAR SHE IS SPEEDING DOWN THE SLIPPERY ROAD, THE CAR RADIO IS UP LOUD SHE REACHES FOR A CIGARRETTE WHEN – BANG! SHE CRASHES INTO THE CAR AHEAD OF HER

SCENE CHANGES TO DONNA AND HER MOTHER IN THE HOSPITAL RUSHING DOWN THE CORRIDOR

MOTHER

(stopping the first person she sees in uniform) Where is my daughter?

ORDERLY

You can get information over there Mam (pointing towards the main desk).

MOTHER

Excuse me can I get some information on my daughter Kricha Niles?

NURSE

I am afraid you will have to wait Mam, the doctors did not yet come out with any information on her case.

MOTHER

(tearing up) .. But she is my daughter and I want to see her, I want to know if she is alright!

NURSE

Again I am sorry Mrs. Niles you'll have to wait.

DONNA

Do you know if Dr. Drummond is in his office? (the nurse is taken aback) Well is he? Tell him Drama Dean would like to speak to him.

NURSE

Did you have an appointment with the cheif of Staff? And if you did it would not be at this time. He is off duty.

DONNA

(reaching into her bag and comes up with a red book) I have his number here, will you get him on the line please. (she is interupted by someone else asking for information)

NURSE

You will have to excuse me. (she attends to the man) I will have to tell you the same thing sir. If their isn't any information I have nothing to give you. (the man continues to protest)

DONNA

Would you please dial the number for me? (she looks at Donna for a few seconds and then proceeds to dial the number. She gets the Doctor on the phone and then moitions to Donna to take the one on the desk) Hello Doctor Drummond, It's Drama Dean.

(AT THE DOCTOR'S HOME HE SITS IN HIS DEN)

DR. DRUMMMOND

Hello Drama, what can I do for you this time?

DONNA

My sister had an accident and she is in the hospital, your hospital. My mother and I would like to know more about what's happening with her, we have not seen her yet.

DR. DRUMMOND

I am sorry to hear that your sister is hurt, and I will arrange for you to see her.

DONNA

I would really appreaciate that doctor.

DR. DRUMMOND

After I get off the phone with you I will come down personally and have a look at her. For now I will leave word that you can get to see her, not for long though.

DONNA

Thank you very much doctor.

DR. DRUMMOND

I will see you soon, bye for now. (he hangs up the phone and looks at his portrait on the wall)

(AT THE HOSPITAL DONNA AND HER MOTHER ON THEIR WAY TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM, AS THEY ARE WALKING MRS. NILES IS TALKING TO HER DAUGHTER.)

MRS. NILES

Thank God for you Donna or we wouldn't know what is happening with your sister. (looks at Donna) You know the person that runs the hospital?

DONNA

Yes his was one of my very first portraits done from Time magazine, he's a very nice man.

MRS. NILES

(impressed by her daughter's ability to get things done) You know! Your sister is very lucky to have you. I see now what you use to tell me about, the other people who wanted information had to wait...

(she is interrupted by a doctor showing them to a corner)

DOCTOR

I am Dr. Denise Magnus, I am doing everything I can for your daughter. (she is summond to the phone) Excuse me please, I'll be only a minute or two.

MRS. NILES

Do you think Kricha is alright Donna?

DONNA

We will know when the doctor gets back, she is coming now.

DOCTOR MAGNUS

Are you Drama Dean?

DONNA

Yes I am.

DOCTOR MAGNUS

I just received word from Dr. Drummond, he says you are very good friends and I must be straight with you. Your sister is in a Coma, she was in a very bad accident, right now what you are going to see is someone who is hooked up to all sorts of gadgets. Bear in mind no matter how bad she looks she is still aware of what's going on around her.

(Mrs. Niles begins to sob a bit, Donna tries to calm her down)

You see the reason we don't like loved one's to see the critical paitence. The vibrations of a loved one in sorrow distresses the patient. So I would have to ask you to compose yourself before you go in. You must understand it is for the benifit of your daughter. And yes Dr. Drummond will be here shortly he wants to give your sister his personal care. So if we are all composed now, lets go in. (Mrs. Niles is still shaken a bit, but prepares herself to go in and see her daughter. She steps into the room and lets out a gasp when she sees Kricha)

MRS. NILES

Oh my God! My daughter my poor daughter, don't let her die God, I'll be good to her.

DONNA

Remember Mum we can help Kricha best by not reacting so strongly...

DR. MAGNUS

Your daughter is right Mrs. Niles, that why it's best if no one see's the patient so soon after an accident. This is the most important stage of her recovery. Weather or not she recovers.

MRS. NILES

I was watching a television program the other day. Someone was in a Coma, his friends came around and talked to him all the time that's all they would do. The doctor on T.V. said it will help him.

DR. MAGNUS

I wouldn't put much faith into T.V. diagnosiss,if she survives the next seventy two hours. We can certainly give it a try.

(Enter Dr. Drummond)

DR. DRUMMOND

Hello everyone, (they all say hello) I would like to look at your daughter for awhile. Will you please wait for me in my office. Someone is waiting outside to take you.

(They exit and head for Dr. Drummond's office.)

(IN DR. DRUMMOND'S OFFICE DONNA AND HER MOTHER ARE SEATED WAITING FOR HIM.)

DONNA

I think if I can get someone interested in Kricha's screenplay it would certainly give her a lift. She sure is excited about that script.

MRS. NILES

Isn't that going to be difficult?

DONNA

What isn't difficult? I really think Kricha would come out of her Coma.

MRS. NILES

How would you go about that? (enter the two doctors)
